Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of his move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
