The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
