A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
